Election Observer Training

Election Observer Training

On Tuesday, May 5, the Clark County Canvassing Board updated three policies that affect the elections process. These changes are due to the physical distancing requirements and restrictions, and use of PPE during the pandemic. Please look them over when you have a chance.

Every year, we conduct an annual political party observer training. This year, due to COVID restrictions we will be producing a video that will be put on our website. The video will be the same training, along with “secret” words spread throughout the video. After a voter watches the video, they will be instructed to email me with their name and contact information, which political party or organization they prefer, and the “secret” words showing they watched the entire video.

We are producing the video on June 8. It will take a few days after that to place it on our website, but should be that week. Please let people in your organization that are interested in becoming a political party (or that want a refresher) this is the way we will be conducting the training. It actually will be much more beneficial to the voter, as it will be placed on our website for two weeks, rather than just a single event that they may not be able to attend.

Every year, we also conduct a Candidate workshop on how to be successful at filing for office. We have cancelled the workshop for this year.

Starting with the Aug. Primary, election observers will be required to wear a mask when entering the non-public side of the Elections office. We will also be checking their temperature with a non-contact thermometer. Anyone with a temperature over 100 degrees will not be allowed to observe that day. Following the 6-foot physical distancing requirements, there will be areas marked off by tape on the floor indicating where an observe may observe from. There will only be allowed a total of two observers in any one observation area. They will also be required to sign a document stating they will abide by these restrictions as long as they are in place.

It is very important to us that we have observers monitor the elections process. It is just as important to us that everyone stays safe during this time. We feel the changes we have made to political parties and observing will help us follow these new restrictions during this time.

If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to me. I am always happy to answer any question you may have.
