Washington State GOP Chairman's Update: New State Budget Crisis & Federal Action in WA Jim Walsh of the Washington State Republican Party State Budget Crisis: A Recent report from the state's tax revenue forecast working group, which revealed a projected shortfall of over $700 million in tax revenues compared to previous estimates. This shortfall threatens the state's balanced budget requirement, as Washington law mandates that the ending fund balance must remain positive at the end of the two-year budget cycle. The current projected balance is precariously close to zero, raising concerns about the legality of the budget signed by Governor Ferguson. Federal Action on State Legislation: A controversial law recently passed in Washington requires clergy members to report any criminal wrongdoing disclosed during ritual confession. The Chairman notes that this law has been challenged in a lawsuit joined by the U.S. Department of Justice, citing constitutional concerns regarding the First Amendment's protections of religious freedom. |
