Official Bill Title:
Concerning the preparation of statements in local voters’ pamphlets.
Un-Official Bill Title
Placing the responsibility for voters pamphlet statements under the Auditor
THIS IS A GOOD BILL
House Bill 1628
AN ACT Relating to the preparation of statements in local voters’ pamphlets; amending RCW 29A.32.280; creating a new section; and
providing an effective date.
Why this matters
House Bill 1628 fixes the mess that occurs when county councilors do not even know that it is their job to assign committees for pro and con statements to ballot measures in local elections. It sets timelines and deadlines so that the auditor who is in charge of all elections is also in charge of the proper opportunity for the public to be best informed. Councilors frequently change so lots of things get left out of the process. Auditors are more long term and thus are more aware of their job and timelines to complete those things under their responsibility. I believe Clark County would not have had such egregious amendments passed this last year if the Auditor had been the one responsible to ensure statements were properly filed and committees to make them were properly formed. We need to get this bill passed.
